Autumn approaches and we could be in a mist of fruitlessness I could not resist bringing my grumpiness back as we head into a period that could shape our country for years to come. The European elections and the latest by-election would seem to show that most people wish to remain in the European Union or, at least, not leave with no deal. Our new leader, BoJo the Dodo, has a different view and must, therefore, be consigned into the rapidly filling bin of useless leaders. You may ask why I believe the so-called remainers now hold sway. I am not so stupid to think that the new Brexit Party is anything other than UKIP as was with Farage. Therefore, any gains they may claim to make are not from a base of nothing but from the figures UKIP got last time. The fact that the Monster Raving Loony Party, a bastion of weirdness since the early eighties but totally harmless, beat UKIP in votes cast, shows that UKIP is a totally spent force but probably not harmless. My views of the four major parties are thus:-
- Conservatives - imbecilic, fuelled with an irrational desire to uphold a referendum vote which is way out of date and based on a total lack of knowledge held by the people who made the vote. Led by a man who has no grasp of reality, no concern about the welfare of the ordinary people of our country and who thinks his rhetoric demonstrates what a great leader he is while in fact it shows him as a egotistical windbag. Throwing money at everything to bring the public on side. The very thing that the press condemned Labour for at the last election. Remember the Magic Money tree, it's in Johnson's garden.
- Labour - muddled, hated by nearly every newspaper editor, vacillating between views to try to keep everyone on side, seemingly unable to explain its position but gradually moving towards supporting a people's vote but hiding under the blanket when saying this in case too many people hear it.
- LibDems - totally clear on what they want but possibly unable to achieve it without full Labour support. Results in recent elections and the latest polls show a surge of support for their view.
- Brexit Party - A one-man show and that one man has shown himself to be far closer to a dictator than a democratic politician. Never elected as a member of the British Parliament, the seat of our democracy, only elected to the EU Parliament which he repeatably condemns. The fact that both Johnson and Farage are bed-fellows of Trump really means any serious debate about their credentials is unnecessary. I have omitted the Scottish National Party as they are in a tricky position where they want independence yet seek to influence the Parliament they wish to leave. Not easy to sustain. My hope for the young people of this country is that we either have a new referendum or a general election and Jeremy Corbyn, slipping down in my estimation, firmly comes out against leaving the EU, wins and goes back to being the conviction politician I thought he was. Likely? I'm not sure
